Bride Without A Groom

I went to a wedding fair this weekend. Honestly. I've been to two this year. Yes, yes, I can practically hear the shocked laughter from those who know me in real life. Me at a wedding fair with my track record! Let's just say I've heard more proposals than the panel at Dragon's Den. I joked with my sister-in-law that I was getting a head start on things for my next ex-finance.

I was actually there for the cake. My sis-in-law runs a small but successful home bakery, Vanilla Valley Cakes, catering everything from treats and desert tables to birthday and wedding cakes.

She was checking out the fair to see if it might be something she could attend as a vendor in the future.

The Wedding and Honeymoon Show had everything you'd expect, with fashion shows, hotels, entertainers, and lots and lots of cakes. What I didn't expect to meet was an author with a stand featuring her debut novel. A spot of genius to promote a book about the ultimate bridezilla at a wedding fair. So, of course I had to stop and say hello. I had a lovely chat with Amy Lynch. Bride Without Groom is now on my To Read List.

Contemporary Romance

 HarperCollinsUK

Rebecca has chosen the most luscious, five tiered, wedding cake – as featured in Hello! Magazine. The engagement ring that she has selected is celebrity inspired. The wedding singer is on speed dial. He doesn’t usually do Michael Bolton, but as it’s for a first dance he’ll make an exception. Father Maguire is checking dates for the parish church as we speak. The deposit on the white sand honeymoon is paid for in full on Barry’s card. Sure, the resort was good enough for Pierce Brosnan when he tied the knot. She has fallen for an ivory lace couture gown that is to die for. The down payment may require her to sell a left kidney, but it will be worth it. Isn’t that why you have two?

There’s one teeny problem. It’s nothing, really. No need to panic! It’s just that Barry has yet to propose. Says he’s not ready! He can be a bit of a kill joy that way. It’s time to face the harsh reality – she is a bride without a groom.

Truth be told, Barry’s had enough. There’s only so much wedding talk that one man can take. Discovering the credit card statement is the final straw. Now he’s leaving for a conference in Bangkok and frankly, he’s looking forward to the peace and quiet. He says he needs time to think about their relationship. As the Tiger beer flows and the tie loosens, his colleague Shelley is providing more than a shoulder for him to cry on. Maybe Shelley is right. Maybe Rebecca only wants the big day.

Back in Dublin, Rebecca worries. Maybe she has pushed Barry too far this time. Best mates Pam and Emer are on hand for counseling and cocktails. With the help of family, friends and a well stocked drinks cabinet, Rebecca puts her cunning plan together. Operation ‘Win Back Barry’ is in full swing. She needs to convince Barry that she’s not crazy – just crazy about him. But wait… who is the mysterious woman that is so keen to talk to her, and what is it that Barry needs to get off his chest?

Trouble Me by Beck Anderson–Release day!

Trouble Me is the follow up to Fix You, in which a film star and a young widow find their lives turned up side down by a chance meeting on a jogging trail. You can read my full review of Fix You here.

Omnific Publishing

Release 12th May 2015

In Fix You, movie star Andrew Pettigrew (Andy to his fans, Andrew to his friends) somehow found the level-headed love he was looking for in young widow and “regular girl” Kelly Reynolds. Now, as they work to mesh their growing relationship with his gold-statue ambitions, things go a bit sideways, in true Hollywood fashion.
Though they’re still wonderfully in love, it’s challenge enough for Andrew and Kelly to decipher what it means to be a family—and a growing family at that—between takes on set. But Andrew also brings history with a temperamental co-star, assorted paparazzi, and someone out there who has serious, perhaps obsessive, issues with him into the mix. Suddenly the Reynolds-Pettigrew clan must fight not just to stay together, but to stay safe.
In Trouble Me, the sequel to Fix You and third novel from Rita finalist Beck Anderson, Kelly and Andrew struggle to stay sane within their whirlwind life. It’s a life that’s equal parts amazing and amusing, less glamorous than you might expect, and spiked with very real fears no amount of stardom can overcome.
Will Andrew and Kelly be torn apart, or will they help each other stay strong at their broken places?

About the Author

Beck Anderson believes in the power of perfectly imperfect women and in the healing power of love. Her first novel, Fix You, grew out of those beliefs and the time to write afforded by the worst Thanksgiving blizzard she’s ever witnessed in West Yellowstone.
Beck balances (clumsily at best) writing novels and screenplays, working full-time as an educator, mothering two pre-teen males, loving one post-40 husband, and making time to walk the foothills of Boise, Idaho, with Stefano DiMera Delfino Anderson, the suavest Chihuahua north of the border.

Command the Tides by Wren Handman–Excerpt

24597001

Book Title: Command The Tides (The Chronicles of Midvalen, Book One)

ISBN: 9781623421809

Genre: Romantic Fantasy

Available in Paperback and Ebook March 17, 2015

Summary:

Enter Midvalen, a world of kings and kingdoms, princes and pretenders.
In the Kingdom of Miranov, Taya seems to have it all: she owns her own store, she’s engaged to be married to a handsome man, and she’s a success. But the truth is more complicated than anyone could guess. Her engagement is a sham, an agreement of convenience that she made with Darren so she can own land and he can get his mother off his back. She thinks things have become complicated when she realizes that she's fallen in love with him, something she never planned to do. But what's worse is discovering that her simple sailor boy is actually the crown prince of neighboring Sephria, and his usurping Uncle is trying to kill him.
When Darren shows up at her door, bleeding and fleeing assassins, Taya is drawn into a complicated mess of politics, fighting, and broken hearts. Her allegiances will be questioned, her love will find a new course, and she’ll do it all while trying to stay alive, save the day, and guard her heart.

Excerpt

“David, help Ryan cover the trail. I’ll help Sarah take Darren. Taya, take my sword and cover us.”

“The girl? She’s like to cut off her own feet as an enemy!” Liam hissed.

Taya felt her face grow hot. As always when she felt embarrassment closing in, she covered it with anger. She grabbed Jeremy’s sword by the hilt, drawing it out with one smooth motion and swinging it down so the point touched the

ground just an inch in front of Liam’s foot. She felt Jeremy take a staggering

step backward, startled.

“I will not only cut our enemy, I will cut the feet off of our enemy and

leave them to bleed in the dirt. I haven’t let us down yet, and I certainly don’t

intend to start now. And if you ever call me ‘the girl’ again, I will show you

exactly what I am expert at cutting off,” she snarled, and then she hoisted the

sword and spun on her heel, storming away before he could react.

She stood at the edge of their sad, sodden company, the hilt of the sword

resting snugly in the palm of her hand, her back straight and her head held high,

and the only thing going through her mind was the fact she had absolutely,

completely, no idea how to use a sword.

What I Do and Why I Do It

I’ve been set a challenge by Rumer Haven to answer four questions about writing. Rumer is about to dive in to first round of edits on her upcoming release, Seven for a Secret. You must visit her website! It’s wonderful! Immediately feel submerged into the former hotel from the 20’s and learn more about this romantic ghost story.

You can read Rumer’s answers to these questions over on her blog. So, let’s move along, shall we?

What am I working on?

As usual I’ve got more than one project on the go. The main piece of work is revisions on an upcoming stand alone called Something Wicked. This is not an YA book. It’s quite a dark story set between Ireland and England in the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. Think Jack the Ripper was a vampire and he might be the key to saving humanity.

It’s under contract but before we jump into editing, I’ve been asked to expand some parts. This involves more research, since I’ve tried to keep it as historically accurate as I can while weaving in the supernatural elements.

The thing about researching Jack is that he scares me. That entire period of history scares me. It involves reading crime scene reports and personal accounts, looking at pictures of the victims and immersing myself into their last moments. These were real people who died horribly. But I also feel to do the story I’m telling justice, I need to. It’s like the writer’s line about rules – You need to know the rules to know how to break them. I need to know the Ripper story to know how to rewrite it.

As usual I’ve managed to tie some celtic mythology. Sure don’t I sneak some into every story? Smile Which brings me onto my other project. Atlantis Rising, the third and final book set in the world of The Guardians. Atlantis Rising is Emma’s book and I’m adding bits and pieces as they come to me while I finish up with Something Wicked.

How does my writing differ from others of its genre?

I’m not sure there is any huge difference. I feel if it was too different it wouldn’t be suitable for the selected genre. In my case that would be Paranormal Romance. Obviously, all my work has my own flavour to it. I like to add at least a little celtic touch to everything. I vary the romantic element. I’ve written love at first sight, dislike developing to love, past life love, and love that matures through friendship. Whatever way it comes, it’s never easy.

Why do I write what I do?

I don’t like to limit myself, which is why a fixed platform for me has always been difficult to pin down. I write what I feel like writing, which is why the age range varies. I’m not a YA writer, I’m just a writer. I write paranormal stories because I get enough of real life in the real world. When I step through the doorway to another world, I don’t want to step into another world identical to the one I live in. I want it filled with good defeating evil, people getting their deserved ending, magic, adventure, and curious creatures. Writing is my escape.

How does my writing process work?

I write every story in full with a pen and paper. I start with scribbling notes and lines. Then scenes, but not necessarily in the right order. I go back and forth through the storyline until I have a complete story. That is my first draft. I rewrite the entire thing as I’m typing it up and from there it’s the usual. Write, revise, write, revise, edit, revise. Over and over until it’s done.

Mermaid blood.

But darkness lurks under the sea. When evil mermen kidnap Kae, the king reminds Shea that having royal blood means making tough choices.

An Arctic dungeon, a fiery plane crash, the legendary halls of Atlantis…and narwhals?

Having mermaid blood just got a lot more complicated.

Shea grimaced. He knew first hand the damage wind could cause. He’d witnessed tornado destruction back in Oklahoma, when he’d lost his dad and their farm. Wind could be devastating. And deadly. He needed to focus on something else. Maybe curtains and wallpaper weren’t such a bad thing to talk about after all. “Tell me again about this lady who hired your mom to decorate? Why is it she can’t pick out her own curtains?”

Hailey laughed. “Decorating is about more than curtains, you troglodyte. It’s about creating a whole look and feel for a home.”

A deep male voice crackled through the overhead speakers in rapid Greek, followed by English. “Attention, passengers. This is your captain. Please keep seatbelts fastened as we try to steer clear of this turbulence and find a pocket of better air.”

“A pocket of better air?” Hailey shook her head. “What does that even mean?”

Chip leaned back across the aisle and grinned. “Maybe this air is broken?” The light streaming through Hailey’s window shifted as the plane changed direction and Chip’s grin faded. “It looks like he made a ninety degree turn. That seems kind of drastic.”

“I’m sure the pilot’s done this a million times,” Hailey snapped, looking out her window again. “Ooh, look at that lightning over there! It’s like a fireworks display!”

Shea resisted the temptation to look out the window. His stomach already felt queasy enough, and now a storm? A slow tingling sensation engulfed his toes. “How close?”

“Oh, look out there now,” Hailey interrupted. “Water spouts!”

Shea felt the blood drain from his face. “Water spouts? Like, tornadoes on the ocean?”

Hailey glanced back at him and gently patted his knee. “This isn’t Oklahoma. I’m sure everything’s going to be fine,” she said as she pulled the plane’s information card out of the seat pocket in front of her. “But I guess it never hurts to review a plane’s emergency procedures.”

As she removed her hand from his knee to point at the diagram, Shea felt the tingling course through his legs, zinging from his toes up into his stomach. It was as if some switch in his body had flipped into high gear. Sweat beaded on his forehead and dripped down his back. The air inside the airplane cabin suddenly felt like it was clinging heavily around him, as if it were charged with electricity and Shea was the only magnet on board. He’d felt this exact sensation before, back at Plainville High School.

On the day of the tornado.

Great, right? Don’t you want to rush out and buy it?

Challenging Destiny Release Party! Cherie Colyer Talks Inspiration

CD ReleasePartyBadge_

The release part for Challenging Destiny is underway and today I’m delighted to welcome Cherie Colyer to talk about her inspiration for the book.

--

Several years ago my husband and I were driving on a two lane road in what felt like the middle of nowhere. There was nothing but narrow road and fields for as far as the eye could see, until we approached a crossroad. Then a two story white building with very few windows, no landscaping, and a tiny porch leading up to double doors loomed in front of us. As we drove closer I was able to read the sign that said it was a church and I remember thinking it didn’t look welcoming.

A few weeks later, we drove by it again. Only this time I imagined an old vintage car parked behind the sign. Inside the car was a teenage boy, Logan Ragsdale. Of course, I wanted to know why he was hiding, but then I realized that whoever was in that building wasn’t his friends. Logan watched the door with hate running through his veins. There was someone inside that he cared about. A girlfriend crossed my mind, but then I thought it would have to be someone he’d risk his life for. His sister.

That’s about the time I heard a girl say, “You’re going to lose her forever if we don’t move soon.” Logan’s reply was laced with contempt, “Why should I trust you?”

Kira Rose’s character quickly formed and the pieces to the story fell in place. Logan and Ariana Ragsdale’s relationship formed. Who they are, what they’ve been through, and why their decision had led them to that church. It took me a few years to actually write Challenging Destiny, and I’m thrilled to be able to share it with you today.

I’d like to thank Carol for having me on her blog today. Be sure to enter the giveaway below!

Thank you, Cherie, for stopping by.

Legendary Blog Tour–Meet the two Arthurs

The Legendary tour has started with prizes and blog posts celebrating this wonderful new Arthurian series. Since Shades of Avalon will be out in April and also has an Arthurian twist, we decided to get our Arthurs together for a chat.

To meet Arthur from Legendary by L.H. Nicole and Arthur from Shades of Avalon, and enter the rafflechopter for prizes, hop on over to here.

Aliana Fagan spent her childhood traveling the world, dreaming of legendary heroes and mythical lands. But after the sudden death of her parents, she hides behind the safety of her camera and her art until a vivid dream has her to digging into her father's research about Avalon and Camelot. She is soon hurled into a magical realm by forces she thought were only the stuff of fairy tales, and finds herself thrown into an adventure she could have never imagined. And nearly everything she thought she knew about the Arthurian legends is wrong.

The independent eighteen-year-old is shocked to find that the people of Avalon think that she is the Destined One, the only person who can summon King Arthur back to life. Most surprising of all is that it's up to her to lead the Knights of the Round Table on an epic quest-an adventure that will transport them across the seven magic realms to reclaim all that has been lost so they can defeat the evil Mordrid for good.  First, she must bring the ancient warriors into her world and reunite them with their lost brothers. But chaperoning legendary knights-with-a-chivalry-complex is a constant challenge, and she certainly never thought she'd be caught between her intense feelings for the noble Sir Galahad and her growing friendship with the King.
To fulfill the prophecy, Aliana will have to discover the meaning of  friendship, bravery, loyalty, true love, and forgiveness. But can she do it all in time to save the realms from Mordrid's impending Armageddon?

About the Author People fascinate the psychologist/author (psycho author) known as Jennifer Lane. Her therapy clients talk to her all day long about their dreams and secrets, and her characters tell her their stories at night. Jen delights in peeling away the layers to scrutinize their psyches and emotions. But please rest assured, dear reader, she isn’t psychoanalyzing you right now. She’s already got too many voices in her head! Stories of redemption interest Jen the most, especially the healing power of love. She is the author of The Conduct Series—-romantic suspense for adult readers—-and recently completed the third and final installment: On Best Behavior. Streamline is her first foray into writing for young and new adults, but she’s found this sort of writing even more fun. A former college swimmer, Jen was able to put a lot of her own experiences into this book. Whether writing or reading, Jen loves stories that make her laugh and cry. In her spare time she enjoys exercising, attending book club, and hanging out with her sisters and their families in Chicago and Hilton Head.

Author Spotlight ~ Lisa Sanchez

I’m going to kick off author spotlights with Lisa Sanchez. Let’s start off with a little bit about this incredibly busy lady.

The lady

Lisa Sanchez is a California cheer mom taxiing her way through life, one car ride at a time. Along with chauffer, she sports several job titles, including, but not limited to: author, chef, seamstress, videographer, nurse, enforcer, and general slave to her three daughters.

I did say “busy”. This doesn’t go into keeping an active blog running, along with social media, writing and putting a fire under the ass of her writer friends when they need it. Lisa is a regular ball of energy.

The books

I first discovered Lisa when I read Eve of Samhain after it was released by Omnific Publishing. I’ve been a fan since. I love Lisa’s special brand of snark and an array of strong female characters. Her style is fast paced, sexy, and witty.

pleasures untold2

obsessed 2

A couple of my favourite quotes. If that’s the type of book you look for, I highly recommend any of the above.

Did I mention her New Adult books Eve of Samhain and Pleasures Unold are only $2.99 on Kindle. Faythe Reclaimed is a steal at only $0.99!

It’s gets better Lisa also writes under the name of Elisa Dane for Young Adults and is currently working on getting her contemporary fiction about a team of cheerleaders out into the world. Streamline Book Birthday Bash–Interview with Jennifer Lane

Today we are celebrating the book birthday of Streamline by Jennifer Lane. The book birthday is happening over a number of blogs this week. For details of other posts, check here. Stay tuned for a giveaway at the end of the post. First, I got to pick Jennifer’s brain about writing and her work as a psychologist.

Interview with the Author

How about we start with a little background. With your background as a psychologist, what inspired you to turn your hand to writing romantic suspense?

Jennifer: I loved my job as a psychologist at the university. It was a dream job. Then my bosses changed and the job became less dreamy. When reality sucked, I turned to fiction! I'm single and I've never been married, but I guess I'm a romantic at heart because I can't imagine writing anything other than romance. And I like a snappy plot with intrigue and danger, so romantic suspense is my preferred genre.

What was the biggest difference in writing YA after writing adult books? Did you find the transition difficult?

Jennifer: Streamline was actually my first novel, and I had no idea I was writing a YA/NA novel at the time. I was simply fascinated by the transition into adulthood, with all its change and growth, so that's the age I chose for my characters. I also had a wonderful time swimming at that age, and wanted to share my experiences. When I started my adult romantic suspense series, I enjoyed writing more realistic dialogue that included "F" bombs for Mafia and military men, as well as the freedom to explore physical intimacy in sexy detail.

I'm fascinated by psychology. While my brother studied it, I read through a lot of his books and enjoyed many late night discussions about my writing process and my characters. I found it brought a lot to my character development. I'm dipping my toes into my first psychology course this summer to continue. How much do you draw on your experience of how the mind works to develop your characters?

Jennifer: I'm "psyched" you're taking a psychology course this summer!  We must chat about what you're learning. It's hard for me to know how much my psychologist training seeps into my writing. I do know I have shared many intense emotional experiences with psychotherapy clients, and I hope to honor that intensity by getting character emotion right. I think good characterization is making the reader really feel for the characters through understanding their motivation and internal experiences.

Do you ever find yourself pausing because as a psychologist you can't agree with the course of action a character will take, even though you know allowing them means staying true to the character? How did this affect your process for Streamline?
I really struggle with showing compassion, both in real life, reading, and writing. I find it very difficult to see the good in people who I find morally repugnant. Child abuse is my hardline. This is something I struggled with while reading Streamline, especially in scenes where the abused character interacted with the abuser while trying to repair their relationship. You handled those scenes with an intense realism and heart that kept me turning pages. Were they as difficult to write are they are to read?

Jennifer: Carol, thank you for that lovely feedback! I'm a big believer in personal responsibility, and I think there should be consequences for individuals who hurt others and/or break the law. Any sort of abuse can be devastating, and there's no excuse for that. But one gift of being a therapist is the opportunity to understand why people do what they do. And if you get down to it, people almost always have a good reason for their behavior. To understand reprehensible behavior isn't to condone it, but it does allow some compassion.

I don't like James, Leo's abusive father. And I tried to write him as a somewhat sympathetic character--as a damaged man who believed he was helping Leo. James has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is an egotistical exterior hiding a wounded, fragile interior. Despite all the times James hurt Leo, James is his father and Leo can't walk away. Leo has such integrity that he won't let his father wallow in depression. Instead Leo reaches out his hand to help. I'm sure many readers were thinking, "No, Leo! Don't do it! Let him rot." I went through many tissues writing those scenes.

You don't shy away from difficult subjects, do you intentionally push the bar when writing or does it come naturally? What other subjects would you like to tackle that you haven't yet?

Jennifer: Life is difficult (and beautiful), so it comes naturally to write about difficult subjects. I also want to represent the beautiful part of life by infusing love an humor into my stories too. One of the most horrifying human experiences is sexual abuse, and I've started a story about twin brothers where one was abused and one wasn't, to explore their different trajectories. Sexual abuse leads to such pervasive pain that I tread lightly in exploring it. But I did read a recent novel that covered sexual abuse in an honest, hopeful manner. (I don't want to spoiler anyone by naming the book).

Tell us more about your next release and are there plans for more YA?

Jennifer: I just finished On Best Behavior (The Conduct Series #3), which Omnific Publishing will release perhaps this autumn. It feels wonderful to finish a series! I'm enthralled by New Adult right now but YA will always have a special place in my heart, so I definitely hope to return to it.

Thank you for chatting with me today, Jennifer.

Now for the Giveaway

Streamline turns one-year-old this week! We're celebrating with a giveaway.

Seems like Leo Scott has it all: looks, brains, and athletic talent. He's captain of his high school swim team with a bright future in college and beyond. But Leo has secrets. His mother's crippling car accident has devastated his family and left Leo to deal with his father's abuse, battered and alone.

Leo's girlfriend Audrey Rose is poised for her own share of success. As one of Florida's top high school swimmers, Audrey dreams of college swimming stardom. But there's an obstacle to her glorious rise to the top. Her number one supporter--her father--is in prison for murder.

Part murder mystery, part tale of young love in a military family, this gripping story takes readers on a journey from Pensacola to Annapolis. Leo and Audrey must band together to rise above the adversity they encounter and find their true selves in the process. When everything's on the line...streamline.

"What an emotional journey! I don't think I have ever cried over a character so much in my life."

~Dani from Paulette's Papers

"The issues that are touched upon in the story: family, substance abuse, teen relationships, trust, honor...they are dealt with in an amazingly realistic, unglossed manner."

~Andrea from The Bookish Babe

"Overall, Streamline is a wonderfully, emotionally complex story about the ones we love, the ones we hurt, the mistakes that break the human heart, and the unconditional love that puts the pieces back together."

~Dani from Refracted Light Reviews

Blurb

Statistician Riona Dade knows all about probabilities. Still, even she'd tell you the chances of discovering you’re a witch, being appointed to the demon-slaying trio known as the Pure Souls, and finding yourself sinfully attracted to a catholic priest who uses amen and other four-lettered words with equal enthusiasm are pretty slim. Also learning your ex was once Hell’s first-round draft pick, and realizing you're a prize catch for Satan’s soul-damning quota leaves a girl feeling like she just won the lottery while being struck by lightning while riding a unicorn across Atlantis.

Trying to keep her mind off role playing the Thornbirds with Father Angeletti, Riona leads the Pure Souls against a maniacal menagerie of Mephistopheles’s minions plaguing greater Boston. Giving in to lust is a direct flight to damnation for both her and the priest, leading Riona to distract herself by striking up a romance with her new, foxy neighbor, Lucy. But she can't shake her attraction to Marcello, and as the tension between them grows thicker than a lumberjack’s beard, temptation may become too difficult to resist.

How long can they deny the pull growing between them, knowing there will be Hell to pay?

Sound good so far? Here’s a little taster:

Excerpt

As Dee sauntered away, Riona focused on the priest’s expression. Marc wasn’t in his collar and coat today, but always carried the air of the clergyman within to some degree, like he wore his collar on the inside.

“How did you end up here?”

She took in the rugged cut of his jaw, the stubble that showed he hadn’t shaved in a day or two. He wasn’t bad looking by any measure, and he probably could have been quite the heartbreaker if he wasn’t a man of God. His eyes weren’t brown, they were black, and glistened like onyx pendants. A firm jaw and supple lips were likely often employed more for battling the fires of Hell than fanning the flames of lust. Nevertheless,  the tools were there to be used, if he so desired. For a man of the cloth, he sure cut that cloth fine.  The priest rose to what she considered the perfect height, had a body not too muscular, but hardly milk toasty, and a swagger in his walk that would make a lady think he could move his body in all the ways the good Lord intended.

If only his collar and his personality weren’t pressed with double starch.

“Paolo’s is the best pizza in town. Trust me on that, I’m Italian.” Sarcasm wasn’t his most attractive trait, but it was one of the most prominent.

“Don’t deflect the question,” Riona commanded with a click of her tongue. “I mean being one of the Pure Souls. I know how you found me…”

“… secured in a straitjacket and pending shipment to a cushy psychiatric facility?”

She crossed her arms and grimaced, wondering suddenly if the hex she’d learned to give demons jock itch would work on humans. “Look, you walk through the steel wall of a meat locker and try to explain it to the police in a way that doesn’t get you 5150’ed, and then you can talk. But, I mean, a priest? Isn’t the Catholic Church, you know, kind of not kosher with the whole magical powers and battling goblins thing?”

“Technically, the Catholic Church isn’t kosher with anything,” he returned. “Kosher’s a Jewish thing, not that I think the people of the book are anymore approving of mortal combat with the spawn of Hell. I was born into it. Magic is a birthright, you know. It shows up in my family every couple of generations. Just like being a priest — like my father before me, and his father before him.”

Guest Post~A Heart Warming Moment From Our Son With Autism

Today we are visit by my friend and aspiring author, Ruth Farrell Gilhool.

Like me, Ruth is a special needs care giver and a mum to her young son. When Ruth shared this moment privately, I felt this is something many of us can relate to. Not just special needs parents, but parents in general.

We tend to see ourselves with many different hats, bank, maid service, nurse, cook, advocate, and taxi service among other things. Sometimes we wonder if that is all we have become. We feel invisible and so we forget we aren’t. We forget others are listening even when we think they aren’t. We forget that the world around us and, in particular, our children don’t see us as we see ourselves and that they are paying attention.

This is often more prevalent when a person is living with Autism. Many of our young people are distant and appear to tuned out from what we say and do around them. They appear involved in whatever task is before them. We get so caught up in dealing with the Autism and trying to help our young person engage with the world, we forget they are in the world with us. A person in their own right with character, quirks not related to the disorder, personality, wants and needs outside of Autism. I have found over the years that my son is taking everything in. He’s like a sponge absorbing every conversation he hears and every detail of the world around him.

Without further ado, this is Ruth’s experience:

This was originally written in Nov 2010 but may help others in a similar situation.

Last night I started to read "Autism and the God connection" that a thoughtful person gave to me on Thursday. It mentioned about three miracles. The first one being self-reflection in the respect of behaviour with a person living with Autism and how we sometimes forget that they may be listening and understanding what we say when we talk to others about them while they are present.  It suggests to offer sincere apologies to that person.  In my case that person is our son Ronan (5 yrs old).  I had before spoken to his teacher and others about him while he was with me.

It said if you do this with true sincerity, the next miracle will occur.

The second miracle is forgiveness and says you will be forgiven. That the relationship soars and attains a higher plateau of feelings.

The third miracle is perpetuate the message and it will have "the ripple effect". Thus the reason why I am sharing this story.

So today I was with Ronan in the car and decided to try it.  I turned off the radio and asked him if sometimes was it hard for him to tell people what he wants using his words and he answered "yes". Whether he completely understood the question I cannot say.

Anyway next I told him that Mummy was really sorry for talking about him to other people when he was with me.That I would try hard not to do that in the future, plus I would try better to understand what he was trying to tell me. I told him I loved him and that he is a great boy. Then I left it at that.  We arrived home about five minutes later.  When I stopped the car and for some reason, I turned about to him and asked him:

"Ronan, what does the word love mean?"

His answer was: "Mummy".

A flood of emotions raced though my body. Overwhelmed, tears ran down my face at the impact of his one word hit me.  I asked him then what else the word love means and he answered "Daddy".  I still had tears in my eyes as I relayed his answers to Paul.

I am now not suggesting that we build a shrine outside the door and start yearly pilgrimages to the Gilhool house!

But for me it was a heart-warming moment in this time of recession and the cold weather we are experiencing at the moment.

Hopefully hearing the story will warm your heart as well.

Thank you Ruth for stopping by and sharing your story. Good luck with your book revisions. :)

For those interested in the book Ruth referred to, this is it. I’m not a religious person in the slightest. I don’t believe Autism is a gift from God, or a punishment for that matter. In fact, I don’t believe in any God at all. I found some of the anecdotes shocking and found myself giving this book the side eye more than once. However, the underlying message is simply to presume intellect, presume the person is aware, something that had been sadly lacking with Autism for a long time and still is in some instances.

This one-of-a-kind book explores autism and its sometimes spiritual connection. Hundreds of anecdotes underscore the heightened awareness, innate gentleness, and exquisite sensitivity in those with autism; that is, a capacity to perceive all things seen and unseen.
