The Guardians of Atlantis

In my Shades series, the supernatural beings refer to themselves as Guardians and here’s a little about them.

A very long time ago, in a small island in a great ocean, a perfect society existed. This place went by the name Atlantis. Two races of mortal beings resided there. One race were the children of the goddess Danu. They were beautiful, strong, and fast with various extraordinary gifts. They lived for centuries, each sharing their life force and strength with a soul mate.

The other race were fragile, innocent creatures—humans. Guardians considered humans almost like children.

But Guardians were curious creatures and left the small island to explore the wider world. Their measure of time wasn’t the same as we know it. When they returned, many generations had passed for humans. The once fragile and docile race had grown savage and didn’t remember the Guardians. Humans took them as invaders and called them demons because of their magic. They named them Tuatha Dé Danann.

Great battles were fought but eventually the The Dé Danann grew weary of death and the destruction of all they loved, and conceded. Believing their soul mate to be the source of a Guardian’s power, humans separated them, tore them from their families, and banished them to live underground. The once utopian island was renamed in honour of one of the Dé Danann queens, Ériu, after she pleaded with the humans. Later it became known as Éire—Ireland.

From Guardians grew legends of beautiful creatures that turned deadly and hideous when threatened. For millennia humans continued to hunt them, covering up slaughters with stories of witchcraft and vampires. With their royal bloodline slaughtered, eventually Guardian numbers shrank and they became nothing more than myth to the modern world. However, Guardians still exist and live among humans, forbidden to love them and fearing a prophecy that tells of a child born of both races who will signal the beginning of their end.

Merlin’s Cave

clip_image002

In a much earlier incarnation of Shades of Avalon, Emrys’s (Merlin) cave was located in Roscommon. In a place called the Cave of the Cats – Oweynagat. It’s a place of much mystical significance in Irish legends. Depending on who you are talking to, it’s either a gateway to the otherworld or a gateway to Hell.

It’s is the birthplace of Queen Medb. Her army went up against Cú Chulainn (Sétanta) when she tried to steal the Brown Bull of Ulster. It’s also the home of the war deity, Morrígan. Both Cú Chulainn and Morrigan make an appearance in Shades of Avalon.

Another possible location was in Dunmore Cave in Kilkenny. Early tales thought to refer to it, call it one of the three darkest places in Ireland. It’s the site of a Viking massacre in the 10th century where up to a thousand perished. Remains found at the site indicate some starved to death in the dark recesses of the cave. In the 15th century, a woman accused of witchcraft hid there until she could make her escape.

More importantly, it’s the location of The Fairy Hall and The Crystal Chamber, and it’s thought another hidden and yet unexplored chamber. Not to mention the monster. What’s a cave without a monster, right? Dunmore cave had Luchtigern, a huge cat-like creature and the cave itself is described as looking like the mouth of a huge beast.

Neither of these caves made the final cut for Shades of Avalon and in the end and Merlin’s cave ended up located outside Ireland.

Legendary Blog Tour–Meet the two Arthurs

The Legendary tour has started with prizes and blog posts celebrating this wonderful new Arthurian series. Since Shades of Avalon will be out in April and also has an Arthurian twist, we decided to get our Arthurs together for a chat.

To meet Arthur from Legendary by L.H. Nicole and Arthur from Shades of Avalon, and enter the rafflechopter for prizes, hop on over to here.

Aliana Fagan spent her childhood traveling the world, dreaming of legendary heroes and mythical lands. But after the sudden death of her parents, she hides behind the safety of her camera and her art until a vivid dream has her to digging into her father's research about Avalon and Camelot. She is soon hurled into a magical realm by forces she thought were only the stuff of fairy tales, and finds herself thrown into an adventure she could have never imagined. And nearly everything she thought she knew about the Arthurian legends is wrong.

The independent eighteen-year-old is shocked to find that the people of Avalon think that she is the Destined One, the only person who can summon King Arthur back to life. Most surprising of all is that it's up to her to lead the Knights of the Round Table on an epic quest-an adventure that will transport them across the seven magic realms to reclaim all that has been lost so they can defeat the evil Mordrid for good.  First, she must bring the ancient warriors into her world and reunite them with their lost brothers. But chaperoning legendary knights-with-a-chivalry-complex is a constant challenge, and she certainly never thought she'd be caught between her intense feelings for the noble Sir Galahad and her growing friendship with the King.
To fulfill the prophecy, Aliana will have to discover the meaning of  friendship, bravery, loyalty, true love, and forgiveness. But can she do it all in time to save the realms from Mordrid's impending Armageddon?

Shades of Avalon Release Grows Near

My 7th release is on the way this Spring and it still seems only yesterday I was preparing to introduce my first book, Shades of Atlantis to the world. I’m deep in editing with the folks from Omnific Publishing at the moment and I’m really pleased with how the book is looking. I admit it’s not easy to see a manuscript plucked and stuffed, but it’s all in the name of presenting the best book possible.

Caleb

Character Bio

Caleb is almost 150 (at the time of the book) and originally from New York. Physically, he appears 21 because of the long life span of his supernatural race. He’s charming, handsome, well-travelled, intelligent, and a bit of a loner. His closest friends are his older brother, Joshua and Seth, who was taken in by his parents when his own died. The three often operate restaurants when not travelling or studying.  He enjoys cooking and is good at it.

Caleb loves his books and had an extensive rare and antique book collection. He’s inherited an interest in folklore and history from his historian father. He enjoys fast cars, nice clothes, and luxury but the people in his life are more important to him. Caleb’s reserved and introspective, often bottling up his feelings and taking the weight of the world on his shoulders. He’s prone to wrong decisions for the right reasons.

Learn more about Caleb

  1. What is your ideal woman like?  -- Triona. I didn’t have an ideal before her. I wasn’t looking. Triona is strong, but isn’t aware of her own strength. She loves without reservation. She questions everything, but has the patience to wait for answers. She brave and kind, soft and tough as the same time. She makes me laugh. She has this way of making me crazy and calm in a single moment.

  2. What do you like the least about yourself? -- That I never feel enough. I try to do right by everyone. I strive to be a better man and often fail.

  3. What are the three most important things in life to you? -- My soulmate, my family and friends, and being a good man.

  4. What music is on your playlist right now? -- An eclectic mix of classical, jazz, and rock.

  1. What is your favorite pet name for a girl? -- I don’t have one. I sometimes call Triona, love or darling. A bit old fashioned but habit I picked up from years of listening to my parents.

  2. What is your idea of a perfect first date? -- It wasn’t really a date, but I once took Triona up Mount Battie late at night. I parked overlooking the bay. It had been snowing, but the sky had cleared and the moon was bright. We talked, really talked for the first time, about life and love. Then we danced in the beams of the headlight and we kissed. That was perfect.

  3. Where is the most romantic place you’ve ever kissed a girl? -- See above.

Extract

I wanted to move away. I knew his touch would only make the ache stronger, but his fingers encircled my arms, holding me perfectly still. He groaned, moving his mouth up my neck to the dent below my ear, and I felt the tip of his tongue caress my skin, almost as if he were tasting me. My heart raced uncontrollably. In one swift motion he spun me around to face him. A desire to consume, a deep physical hunger, darkened and glazed his eyes. Caleb’s hands glided down to my waist, and mine twisted through his hair as I fought to breathe through his feverish kisses. I could feel his breathing against my lips as shallow and rapid as my own. Caleb raised his hands behind his head and slid them over my hands, unlocking my fingers from his hair and gripping my wrists before lifting them to the cold glass behind my head. His lips dragged from mine and pressed against my ear. His body crushed against mine. His voice was deep with both agony and pleasure.

“I could take you now,” he rasped.

I sighed, breathless with the ecstasy surging through my veins. I wasn’t thinking; he had me completely within his control.

“I could have any woman I want, but I only want you. I’ve never wanted anyone before you. You are my soul mate.” His voice was persuasive, so irresistible, as if he had connected directly into my brain. Caleb pulled his face back inches from mine; his eyes were shimmering as tiny lights danced in his irises. “I love you, Triona.” The way he spoke those four words made my legs weak. I could barely get my thoughts together, but I knew that Caleb was showing me what he was capable of, how much he was keeping back, so I would know that if he only wanted me in that way, it would have happened months ago when we first met. He wasn’t rejecting me.

“I love you too,” I told him, trying to keep my voice even. This was yet another price to pay for loving Caleb. But I couldn’t not love him now; what choice did I have? I would have to wait. Wait for answers and wait for the ache inside me to be satisfied.

Caleb sensed I was caving again, giving in to his will. His grip loosened, and his body moved away from me.

“This, us, is not going to be easy, is it?” I muttered dryly, grimacing at him.

A relieved smile stretched his lips, but his eyes remained guarded. His finger brushed over my lips, and then he took my hand. “Come with me.”

“Where?” I asked. The aching was fading — not disappearing, just being shut away for the moment.

“I’m distracting you.”

Shades of Ireland at Brú na Bóinne

It’s Saint Patrick’s week here in Ireland. It’s the week when the world is awash with green and everyone and their mother goes back in time until they find a link to the little land on the edge of the Atlantic.

I can’t think of a better time for to tell you I’ve been revising for months and the manuscript for the sequel, Shades of Avalon is finished and will shortly be going to my publisher! It’s taken a long time and I can honestly say the story has gone through a dizzying number of changes. The second book once again takes the characters from Camden to England and Ireland as they try to unravel the dark plans of the last remaining council member.
One of the major locations in book 2 is Brú na Bóinne. This is a region of Ireland around the River Boyne in Ireland and consists of 40 passage tombs dating back 5,000 years. The area also contains more than a third of the megalithic artwork in Western Europe. The most recognizable of these and featured in Shades of Avalon is probably the Tri-Spiral. It is used as a symbol of  Brú na Bóinne and often of Ireland.
twi 3
The Tri-Spiral is often thought of as a Celtic symbol but it pre-dates the arrival of the Celts in Ireland by many years. Archaeologists guess at what it means, including representation of  deity and the possibility it depicts the three main sites of Brú na Bóinne—Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth. The above image is taken from a carving in the central chamber at Newgrange. Other spiral carvings appear on the entrance stone at Newgrange, kerbs stones and internal stones at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth.

However, it’s really anyone’s guess what the symbols really mean. They are simply too old to conclusively know.  Likewise with the purpose of these structures. We can guess they were used to either bury or honour the dead from the remains discovered there. Clearly they had another purpose. Perhaps ceremonial or maybe scientific.
2013-03-06 12.38.16
Above is a replica of the granite stone basin at Knowth, known as Dagda’s Cauldron. Dagda’s Cauldron in mythology was thought to be life sustaining and is sometimes associated with The Holy Grail. Perhaps in the past the dead were cremated, the bones and remains placed in the basin. This particular basin is suggested to depict Atlantis in the carvings on stone. This leads us to the possibility the passageways were not only ceremonial, but scientific in nature.
It’s suggested the kerbstones at Knowth(some damaged or missing) were detailed depictions of the night sky and that once upon a time the moon and sun travelled though the passageways and illuminated the internal chambers during the equinoxes. This is impossible to verify since passageways have been distorted or destroyed over time. Most notably and controversially during excavation when a concrete slab was erected inside the western passage.
However, we can see the illumination phenomenon at Newgrange.
2013-03-06 11.51.23
There are two basin’s at Newgrange in the right hand cavity of the cruciform chamber. Also made of granite. For those lucky enough to stand inside the cruciform chamber at sunrise on the days around the winter solstice(during cloudless skies), they will see golden light travel down the length of the passageway for several minutes before reaching the  chamber as the sun passes in front of the upper opening. The external walls are made up of hundreds of river stones(rounded gray stones) and thousands of pieces of white quartz(Grian Cloch or Sun Stone). Quartz is also an element of granite, the stone used for the basins.

Chamber
The above two images are deceptive. The Newgrange  passageway is a tight squeeze. At times it’s necessary to duck or turn sideways for the average sized person. There is more room inside the chamber under the high vaulted corballed roof, room for perhaps twenty or so adults comfortably. It feel very secure although none the slab roof stones are secured by anything other than ancient engineering.
